Canadian party politics exhibit 2 outstanding peculiarities: the long tenure in power at the federal level of the Liberal Party on the one hand, & the ascendancy of no less than 4 opposition parties at the provincial level, each of the 4 securely controlling the gov's of one or more provinces. Federally, the traditional 2-party system has been destroyed by the rise of new parties in the 1930's, thus splintering the opposition to the Liberals. The strength of the opposition parties in provincial politics suggests that many Canadian voters support the Liberals federally, but choose to check their power in the country by voting against them provincially. An analysis of the federal & provincial voting behavior of the electorate by SE, regional & ethnic groups in Quebec, Ontario, the Prairie Provinces & British Columbia, suggests the surprising stability of this pattern, although the final defeat of the Liberals in the 1957 federal election indicates that a period of transition may at last have set in in Canadian politics.
